Finding a thoughtful Valentine’s gift isn’t an easy feat. But a special trip to Belize couldn’t be a more perfect gift for you and your boo—and you can do it all without breaking the bank. Besides, what couple can resist the Caribbean? Strolling hand-in-hand on the beach, exploring the largest living barrier reef, or being beckoned with curiosity on a cultural tour for new memories together. In a romantic destination like Belize, romance oozes from every district, but you can specifically sweeten your ‘bae-cation’ up by basing yourselves out of Placencia Village.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day and celebrating the month of love, we’re taking you through three date ideas to do from Placencia, Belize.
A Lubantuun Love Story
No repetition here: every archeological reserve in Belize offers something new to discover in the form of ancient miracles. Exchange X’s and O’s at Xunantunich, sweet selfies on the boat ride to Lamanai, or cash in a full-day date to Caracol. And if you’re in Placencia, Belize, your best bet is to head to Lubantuun or Nim Li Punit for the nearest Maya site in the South to tap into your playful side—like Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood.
The Maya temples of Lubaantun are unique in that they were built entirely without the aid of mortar; instead, each stone was carefully measured and cut to fit the adjoining one. Situated above a tributary to the Columbia River, Lubaantun, sits near the Maya village of San Pedro Columbia in the Toledo District, 13 miles from Punta Gorda Town. Lubantuun also consists of 14 major structures grouped around five main plazas, Lubaantun was built in the Late Classic period and is the largest ceremonial center in southern Belize. At two hours away by road, this is one date idea to include in your Belize baecation itinerary!
Snorkel With Your Sweetie
Exotic, scenic, and almost spiritual. Snorkeling together can be a great way for the two of you to look at life from a fresh new perspective and moreover, it’ll also help build your trust and faith in one another.
Hands down one of the most noteworthy underwater sites on Earth is the Great Blue Hole, which is located off the coast of Belize near the country's Lighthouse Reef. Scuba divers may be able to go deep into the Great Blue Hole, exploring caves around 130 feet deep, but snorkelers don't miss out on anything by staying near the surface. Although, you don’t need to venture to Lighthouse Reef Atoll to get up close and personal with Belizean locals (including live coral!) like sea turtles and docile nurse sharks. From Placencia, head out to snorkel favorites like Turtle Alley, the Silk Caye Marine Reserve, or even Glover’s Reef Atoll.
Woo Your Other Half At A Waterfall
This one is specifically for the adventure and hike-loving couples that visit Belize. Stretch your legs some in the South, home to plenty of trails with varying difficulty, that almost all culminate in either a swimming hole or a full-fledged waterfall! From Placencia, we recommend Antelope Falls inside Mayflower Bocawina National Park, just over an hour’s drive from Placencia Village.
As an out-and-back trail measuring 3.1 kilometers, the 2-hour trek leads you to incredible vistas of the lush and seemingly infinite Stann Creek district and the magnificent Antelope Falls. If you are up for even more of a challenge-laced bonding experience, you can rappel down the face of this gushing waterfall. Bring a picnic lunch and extra water, then head out on one of the well-marked and maintained trails—there’s a refreshing respite waiting at the top for a ‘massage’ by nature!
